Which event in US history, apart from independence/the constitution should Americans feel most proud ?

Which event in US history, apart from independence/the constitution should Americans feel most proud ?
And on the other side of the coin which event, apart from the situation in Iraq, should they feel most ashamed of ?
Also please cover the same questions for Britain.
An American friend and I have come up with a few for both countries, but are undecided and would like to have other opinions.

U.S. Most Proud – Role played in WW2
U.S. Most Ashamed – Treatment of indigenous tribes.
G.B. Most Proud – Magna Carta
G.B. Most Ashamed – Participation in the slave trade.

I believe Americans should be proud of the fact that they bought Alaska for penny’s on the dollar, and ashamed that good industrial jobs that built this country, have been sent over seas.
Going to the moon before the decade (1960′s) was out and returing man safely to Earth….

We should feel proud that we stopoed a horrible dictator and freed a country from torture and oppression from its own government and most ashamed that we left Vietnam to be taken over by communistic rule.
WWII was our proudest and finest moment. I have no interest in the rest of your questions; especially since the events causing shame are legion and it would be too time consuming and nonproductive to list them.
